Senne Martens (2002) has been actively involved in the performing arts from an early age. He began by studying acting at the Hasselt Academy, from which he graduated with a specialisation degree ten years later. Despite his love of acting, he felt a hunger for more. During his final year of specialisation, in which he co-directed his graduation production, his love for directing blossomed. That passion is driven above all by his other passion: opera. Not only does he sing at the Academy of Leuven, but he also attends operas at home and abroad on a regular basis.
In his desire to combine his two great passions, he took part in the Interfaculty Theatre Festival in Leuven, where he staged a highly acclaimed production of his own adaptation of Giuseppe Verdi’s opera ‘Rigoletto’, which also earned him an award. He returned as a member of the jury a year later. He then helped direct LyricLab’s production of ‘Figaro’. Last year, he gained experience as a dramaturg by taking up an internship at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. Among other things, he assisted with Johan Simons’ production of ‘Wozzeck’. Having co-founded the Belgian Opera and Operetta Organisation, he is now eager to direct his first large-scale opera, ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’.
